Our Place

AVARA sits on a narrow finger of coconut land at the edge of Kumarakom, where Vembanad Lake opens out. This is what surrounds it, and why the property belongs here.

The land

Most of what you see here is landscape. Coconut palms, water, and a low line of tiled roofs among them. The land is a thin strip between the backwater and the village, and AVARA takes up only a part of it.

The lake is Vembanad. It sets the weather, the light, and the pace of the day — wide enough, on a still morning, that the far shore takes a while to appear.

Arrival

The way in is a stone path through the planting, past a low laterite wall with the name on it. The lake shows itself between the buildings before you reach your room.

The architecture

Terracotta roofs, laterite walls, dark timber, and verandas deep enough to keep the sun and the rain out. The building is low and close to the ground, built the way houses are built here.

The climate

The monsoon is part of the year, not an interruption to it. When it comes, the roofs are loud, the paths shine, and the far shore disappears for a while. Some days the rain becomes the plan.

The village

Kumarakom is a working village, not a view. The paths behind AVARA carry bicycles and washing and people who live here. You can walk them with someone who does.

Quiet here still has a sound.

Water, birds, rain on tile. AVARA was put on this strip of land to sit inside all of that rather than above it — low roofs, open verandas, and only as much building as the land could take. What the place looks like came from what was already here.
